I have never used the GPS device (Global Positioning System), although I’ve wanted to have since two years ago. I have just bought a few days ago in the geological equipment store in Jl. Kaliurang KM 8.5, Yogyakarta, its tokogeologist.com. This stores provide geological field equipments from teodolite, Geology compass, geological hammer, field geology loupe and other equipment. Of course I like to see all of these equipments. This shopping place informed by my daughter who still is studying in the Faculty of Geology, one of the University in Yogyakarta.
The reason I want to have GPS is because my daughter needed for Field Geology work at Karangsambung which will be in the end of this year, also in photography I am often hunting to remote areas outside the city; so I think the tool is much useful for us. The one I have chosen is Garmin GPSmap 62s, because the type of GPS is simple and is more than enough for my purposes. After opening a new box of this tool, I read the manual first, then open the menu and interface of this tool; fairly easy and you may need to search on the internet term GPS, peace of cake…!
One thing, this GPS can be connected to a computer by USB cable. Software built-in from the Garmin GPS is Basecamp, Mapinstall and Map Manager; all this software can be downloaded for free via the Internet, they are:
Basecamp for Mac
Basecamp for Windows
Actually, the internal memory is mounted soft copy of the software, user guide and baseman; so that its owner can directly and easy to use. After quite familiar and learn some of the GPS awhile then I tried to use and utilize this tool and made route plan on a computer using Basecamp for Mac, then transfer it to the GPS device. Next morning, execute it and automatically Garmin GPS will give a warning sound of “beep” and show where we are going each time we encounter an intersection or waypoint that we have created in the route plan. I will not go to far how to use the GPS, but I am more interested in sharing the benefits of this tool are given.
Other features are digital compass display, log tracking, micro SD memory card slot, 1.6 GB of internal memory. The LCD and the body looks tough and strong with simple menu interface. Use AA size battery power source so it is easy to get it.
Try GPS for travel to the Sermo Reservoir, through Wates city, continued to the north, into the Kulonprogo hills, until reaching the Tosari village, Samigaluh, and heading eastwards back home through Nanggula and Godean. This route can be seen at this link:
Some photo shots had been made in Sermo reservoir and couple in small river in Kulonprogo.
Now, I have been searching of coordinate of some photography place around Yogyakarta, how to geotagging. The most important, most likely you won’t be lost…!
